Comic Creator Who Is Inspired by Rob Liefeld
This is Rob Liefeld, the comic writer.. at a past function. He has written several comics and some of his best works include The New Mutants and X-Force among other collections of comics that he has worked on.
Much information about his works can be found here on wikipedia.
A little bit about the site’s past
Rob started this site sometimes in 2005 and operated it through to mid 2012 when he dropped the domain. Today, some of his works can be found on robliefeldcreations.com. It was probably too much work and confusion to keep more than one domain going.
I recently bought this domain and being an advent lover of comic works; I will be publishing content pertaing to comic arts in general; and other humorous content that I come across. Currently, there are several posts that I’ve published and you can access them by clicking through various topics or categories below.
This little comic relief, sponsored by the Talking Moose of course!. Actually though, it’s me, Dr. Halls, who thought this could turn into something fun and interesting. Apparently not yet. This is definitely not as fun and informative about comics as Comicvine.com.
October 10, 2015 update
With disappointment, I learned today that this homepage; and all the posts are not being indexed, at all. zero. If I had to guess; it would be because the images in the posts were supposed to be set to noindex. But they were not. It’s going to be a pain in the butt to try to get this problem fixed; and potentially, it is unfixable.
A Life of Desolation
This is my story of how comics helped me build self esteem and relate with others well. My name is John Theodore and I’m now 22. I am a dad of one; happily married and work as a fitness instructor in my own fitness center.
While growing up, I had problems relating with people. Naturally I was a shy child. But worse still I had self confidence problems. I always felt much insecure; and at times as if I was hated because of my family background. When I talk of family background; it is a little bit complicated; my dad was a drunk who committed suicide and my mum used to work in a bar- I don’t have to dwell more on that.
I was used to being teased; not only by other kids. But even some adults in our neighborhood because of what was my family. This always made me feel so downtrodden and unloved. For self defense, I normally remained isolated and a loner most a times. I hated all the mockery; which surrounded me both at school and in my neighborhood.
Rising against the Odds Through the use of Comics
It came to a point when I couldn’t take it anymore at about the age of 12. I knew that I had to do something to change my life otherwise I would end up in drugs or other irresponsible activities. Until then, it had never occurred to me that I would get some inspiration and raise my self confidence from superhero characters.
It all happened by a mistake one day while walking home from school. On my way home; I found a dirty comic book; which must have been thrown away due to it worn out condition. I picked it and when I reached home; I decided to go through it. It was about a superhero character whose earlier life began at a low level. The story in the comic magazine illustrated how the superhero was once bitter and in an acrimonious relationship with almost everyone because of his background. But still went to become one who saved his community when a catastrophic disaster of earthquake struck the area.
Realizing Myself and Appreciating Comics
The whole story was well craft and so inspiration that it rekindle the hope that I had lost in life. I realized that though I was a reject ion the eyes of many, tainted and quiet obscure all that didn’t wreck my chances of becoming successful in life. I just had to go against all the odds; endure all the embarrassments and voila; I’d be what I was destined to be.
That was what changed me. From that very moment I started taking everything positively and working hard towards achieving my dreams. Today, I feel that I made it. Whenever, I look back, I really can’t imagine how powerful comic can work miraculously to change one’s destiny.
How Comics Relate to Real Life
As children, comics offered a source of entertainment and inspiration for most of us. Honestly, comics were mainly a form of entertainment than a source of inspiration. However, as we applauded and reveled in the actions of popular comic heroes like the Flash or Batman; we also drew inspiration from these actions. Some of the heroic actions actuated by our comic heroes were really inspirational to most of us as kids.
Reflecting on comic stories where the hero managed to subdue a seemingly unconquerable villain has always uplifted my spirit when faced with a seemingly insurmountable problem in life. Similarly, majority of my friends contend that they treat most of life’s hurdles like the cruel villains; which were bound to fail in our childhood comics. Drawing from my childhood experiences and my adult reflections regarding comics and inspiration; I have implemented an entertainment and inspiration program for kids based on comic stories.
My Childhood Experiences
I was relatively small-sized as a child; which presented me as easy prey for bullies. From home to school, I was usually picked on by big kids. Being small and ‘soft-featured’; I became the doormat for every kid to step on. To make matters worse, I was smart in class; which attracted envy and made most of the kids jealous.
However, my smartness created an insatiable appetite for knowledge and hence I spent most of my time reading. At first, I did not acknowledge nor appreciate comic books as a source of any valuable knowledge. I considered myself too smart to waste my time reading what I considered as ‘children’s books’ and concentrated on scholarly materials. This trend continued until a teacher recommended comics as a source of entertainment and also inspiration for us students.
Changing Perspectives from the Inspiration of Comics
It was during the first day of the annual Anti-bulling Week event in our school; when one of the teachers related bullying experiences with comic stories. The teacher pointed out that most of the villains in the comic stories were similar to bullies and any of the victims could draw inspiration from the heroes in comics to overcome their perpetrators. In other words, the teacher was insinuating that we could use resilience drawn from comics to overcome bullies. These comments changed my perspective towards comics and I started devouring any comic book I could lay my hands on.
The ‘Comic Magic’
I will never forget how my life was changed by this new-found source of knowledge, entertainment, as well as inspiration. In addition to enjoying the high level entertainment offered in the comics; I had found a source of inspiration to beat the bullies who always picked on me. For starters, I learnt that most of my qualities; which were used by my tormentors against me; could be overturned into strengths to beat the bullies. In this light; I could use my innocent looks to support my accusations against a bully and win.
Additionally, I could use my smartness to beat the bullies at their own game. I used my knowledge to silence my critics and to embarrass bullies in front of other classmates. I quickly gained a reputation and respect among my peers and my bullying days came to an end. Following these experiences, I have always appreciated the entertainment and inspiration contained in comics.
Now that I am an adult
Now I read comics for fun and also as a source of inspiration to face life’s hurdles.
I relate most of my life’s experiences with comics’ events and use the analogy to overcome seemingly insurmountable problems. Consequently, I have teamed up with other comics’ enthusiasts in creating and implementing a program based on comic book experiences. Our program is implemented in school settings, daycares, and also at home for kids. The kids are taught how to read comics for fun and also as a source of inspiration. Today as I watch a Batman movie; I salute the hero for inspiring me to inspire kids in an entertaining way.
How I used Comic Books to Motivate My Son to Love Education
Parenting has never been an easy task. Ask any parent out there and they will tell you of the challenges that they face each day in upbringing up their little one(s). There are many hurdles that parent face while all along desiring to have their offspring(s) become responsible person(s) in the society. I don’t mean to say that all what parents tell their kids is usually unbiased and the way forward or the choices that they make to their children are usually the best. But there are some things that parent fail to agree with the kids- even kids as little as five.
This means that an effective way has to be in place to make the kids be ready to listen, learn as well as work towards being responsible in the society. Moreover, today due to the stringent work schedules; which occupy most of the parents in their quest to provide a vibrant livelihood to their families; the time that most parents spend with kids may not be enough to give them a better solid future- a future that any parent would want for her kids.
This is my story of how I turned things around for my son, Sam; who at the time of doing this was 7 and to date he’s a changed boy with a promising future.
I partially blame myself as a mother for letting Sam fall in love with the TV and video games while he was young. To me, I saw it a way of keeping him preoccupied and thus giving me the space to do what I wanted to do around the house without being concerned by his nagging; mind you my son can disappoint you if he’s idle and you are around- at least that was the case while he was young.
em>A Ruined Life Turns Around
Gradually, the TV and video gaming became part of his life to an extent that even when I took him to school; he didn’t like the idea. Sometimes I thought he was different because he even never told me about any friends at school. He also didn’t take the studies seriously and in the evening after school he had trouble concentrating with his homework. Even the books that I bought for him to read while at home didn’t make him feel better or motivated.
With time this became something of concern to me. I felt that as a mother I was doing him a disfavor. This would at times trigger me to withdraw the TV and video console from him. Unfortunately this always made him bitter and more agitated that he would not even talk to me.
I knew that I needed a better solution for all this while he was still young. I had none till one day while at the mall where we had gone shopping.
As usual, Sam had this habit of popping into an outlet located at the mall and I would buy him one or two comics. He really loved to read comic books. That day while at the comic store; an idea came into my mind. I realized that I could use them to get him off the TV and video games. And that was what I did.
I never imagined that he would really love comics that much and embrace this new life. But he did. The more I bought him good comics; the more I shifted his desire to reading and within no time he started to love books. To date, I appreciate all that happened to him.
Seeking Effective Modes of Teaching
As much as it might appear as an easy task; being a teacher is not. This is especially cumbersome when you are dealing with teenagers who are undergoing adolescent changes and are particular about the changes that are happening to them. These are the kinds that can be funny, moody and at times resistance especially for those who have problems fitting in. Therefore you must seek an effective way of relating with such juniors while trying to ensure that they grow up to be responsible persons in the society. Believe me not; this is something which requires much of rational thought if at all you want to realize nothing short of the best.
My name is Ben Foster and I have been a teacher of three years at a local high school in my country. I won’t claim that the three years working have been the best because of the numerous problems that I’ve experienced while dealing with the teenagers that I handle. As much as I sought the best way to be my best and impact the necessary norms and skills to the students; I still felt that there was a lot; which needed be done. I always felt that a different approach was needed to handle some subject effectively. However, this approach(s) was ever elusive.
Despite the fact that I attended several workshops and seminars or read educational materials on how to be an effective teacher while working with teenagers; I never came across anything unique. Even networking with other experienced teacher didn’t prove to be effective as most claimed that educational usually follows a traditional protocol and that nothing changes much. Some even went ahead to comment that puberty is a stage for all to pass on their way to adulthood and hence all my worries would pass with time. However, I was convinced that there was a better move.
The Science Symposium
Then came my fourth year of employment and it is during this time that the idea rolled out. Earlier that year, I attended a science symposium; which had been organized regionally for both teacher and student. My school had no representatives from the students fraternity; (at least I saw no familiar face of any student there). This is because the event was organized during the holidays. But I felt that I had represented it in the best way possible.
This is because during the two day event; I happened to come across a mathematical teacher who was talked about how she was using cartoons and other animations to enable her students get the mathematical concept more succinctly and have better memory of all that she taught them. Although the speaker had no statistical prove of how effective her methodology was; I felt that there were some hidden gems in all that she spoke about.
I met her briefly after the event and we didn’t have time for much discussion, though I expressed my interest to try working on her ideology with my students; she encouraged me to go ahead. But be cautious on how the students would react to it. I saw no problem would crop her as I told her how disciplined my students were.
The Comic Saga
I spent the holiday preparing my syllabus and picking some topics to have them presented and explained as comics.
When schools opened, I started using my method in teaching. True to the words of the mathematical teacher at the symposium, the method was effective. But maybe I must have forgotten that I was dealing with teenagers.
I realized this quite late. I had resulted in having the students prepare some comics themselves at times and then share them on the class’ facebook group whereby others could access them. Yeah, there was some that got several likes and comments and thus proving how effective the method was.
This didn’t last long however; I decided to teach a topic about human sexuality and the risks of irresponsible sexual behavior using the method. As usual, I asked my students to create comics and share them. The task was to be done over the weekend; and since I was busy then; I never checked on what had been posted till Monday when I got to the office. I was astonished to find that some comics created had generated a lot of debates and commenting because of their content; which was a bit obscene and gross.
But the worse part, all this information had leaked to the school’s principal and I knew I had a case to answer.
