Flip Camcorder and What’s So Special About Them?
This website was obviously about Flip camcorders. Let’s face it; today videos are so powerful at influencing the behavior of human. Whether through education or entertainment, videos have a way into our hearts. That’s may be the reason why many businesses and companies are using them as part of their marketing strategies.
Okay, that may be a harsh reality to you
What’s your opinion about the numerous Youtube videos that you have watched. I’m talking about those funny cat videos, celebrity videos, etc.
Anyway I’m currently recreating this site. But there are several posts that I have published and they are worth reading. Some are some personal experiences in video recording and shooting and you will definitely enjoy them. You can access them by clicking on the posts below.
My Flip Camcorder
So I got a flip camcorder for Christmas. I really don’t know why the family thought I wouldn’t use it to record them when they’d had a few drinks like they normally do around the holidays. But boy where they ever embarrassed when they realize that the video I got of Uncle Fred trying to do his “pull my finger” gag, and nobody falling for it, was now up on Youtube. I mean, when everybody has you figured out right down to the five-year-old nephew, you might as well quit.
Seriously, though, it’s pretty cool. I had to learn a little bit about video editing. But once I learned how to tell by feel where all the buttons are, the camcorder itself was pretty easy to use. I tend to assume that I’m not shooting the next Hollywood blockbuster on it. The camcorder gets decent quality. But it’s not like I’m carrying a professional video flip camcorder that has to weigh about twenty pounds around on my shoulder.
So I suppose you could say I’ve become something of an amateur videographer. Some things I’ve filmed so far are the neighbor’s kids playing in a snowbank, a dog chasing a cat up a tree (I’ll just say the dog never had a chance), and a couple of guys dressed up for a local cosplay convention. One thing I especially like to do is walk down the downtown district and see if I catch anyone who looks sort of familiar. I’m pretty sure I saw my state’s senator at a local restaurant one time.
I don’t want to give the impression that I think it’s perfect, though.
However, I do have to keep a close eye on the amount of memory on the SD card. But I think I’ll get one with more memory on it in the near future. If you use a camcorder a lot, don’t bother with the generic brand batteries. This was because the camcorder will suck the juice right out of them. (For the record, I use Duracell in mine; and they seem to work fine as long as I remember to put them in the right way.)
The one time I forgot to turn it off before I put it back in the case; I recorded my voice yelling at some stupid driver who almost backed his car into mine. So it’s not perfect and I’m not perfect, either.
Nonetheless, I still like the camcorder, though. Watching what I get is kind of fun most of the time. It’s all about timing the shots right; and keeping it handy in case I see something that I want to catch on the flip camcorder camera. Maybe next time, I’ll catch that chipmunk in my yard when he has his cheeks full of food.
One thing that’s pretty sensitive to me
This is that I carry my camcorder with me a lot and I worry that I’ll get footage of a terrible car crash. While one might hope that the footage would help the driver who wasn’t at fault deal with the insurance company and any legal issues, I’m a bit of a chicken when it comes to seeing a car crash. So I suppose what I’m saying is that you should drive carefully if you don’t want my camcorder footage to be part of the aftermath of an accident you had the misfortune of causing someday.
Maybe I’ll even take it back to the next family holiday gathering just so I can see who I can embarrass next time. In my family, you never quite know who might do what next and maybe I’ll catch Grandma trying to do the Chicken Dance and completely failing at it again. Grandma, if you see this; that was hilarious. Maybe they will see that I have my camcorder out and try to be on their best behavior even when they’ve had a couple glasses of wine.
However, I consider it more likely that they’ll be the topic of the next, “Hold my beer and watch this!” video; in which they utterly failed at something. My experience is that most of them are pretty sane for most of the year. But there seems to be something about the holidays that brings out the loopiness and maybe I’ll catch it on my flip camcorder.
My Passionate Hobby
It has never occurred to me that there is power; which lay on the videos. Since my dad bought a camcorder when I was 12, I have been using it to capture amateur videos mostly about family events that we regularly have; birthday parties, get together, picnics, Christmas bashes, outings and many others.
After capturing the videos, I would download them to our family PC and do some basic editing. I never paid much attention to all this stuff and usually did it for fun. At times, I would capture some scenes and make family pictures from those; which looked stunning ; this always made my parents happy.
As a matter of fact, I’ve always loved capturing those moments when one of the family members or guests were caught unaware doing or saying anything awkwardly stupid. At times, I would fight with my older brother, who for all reasons was the one most upset-minded person in most of the events and later make fun of him. To me, this was a hobby.
The holiday expedition
Shortly, before Christmas last year, we went to visit Tsavo National Park, Kenya. This was one of the many vacationing treats that we usually had during Christmas. Like always, I was excited to be armed with my flip camcorder ready to capture the glamorous moments of nature. The terrain was beautiful and so were the scenery, and the wild animals were spectacular to watch and because of that, I captured them.
We had a wonderful guide who knew the entire park very well; which he had been working there for 12 years. He knew the best spots to capture the wild animals and where to find them as well.
The day was hot and the sightseeing was hectic. There was a lot to capture; and by afternoon, the flip camcorder memory was full yet we had a lot to see. I didn’t know what to erase and what to leave… I decided to do that after I ate lunch.
As we headed for lunch
He received a radio communication; which he later explained to us was about a poaching incident. He told us that a white rhino, one of the endangered species and among the few left in the world, had been found dead with fresh wounds.
As it occurred to us later, the wildlife management staff had been looking for the animal since the night before when they noticed that a GPS device; which they used to track it was inoperative. Their worst fear of finding the animal had passed was confirmed when they later found the body that afternoon.
Therefore, the guide wanted our driver to drop him at the offices near so that he could join the other staff at the spot where they found the rhino’s body. I felt that I needed to capture this and wanted to go with the tour guide, something my dad vehemently refused. I insisted, and seeing how disappointed I got, dad asked the guide if he could ensure my safety. He allowed me to accompany him, but to be back by the time they were finished with his nap.
The guide and I were dropped and we boarded a staff vehicle to that spot. Arriving there, I never wasted time as I began video recording of the poor lifeless rhino claimed to be over 40 years old. I deleted all other videos that I had earlier captured and concentrated on the poor animal. The other staff members wanted to restrict me, but the guide who brought me there assured them that all was fine. I capture the scene from various angles.
The pitiful video shootage
Later that day, when I got home, I edited the video, added some text and then recorded an audio for it. In the audio message, I lamented about the miseries of poachers. I added the audio and rendered the video.
For the first time, I decided to share the sorrowful video through YouTube and Facebook. By morning, I was astonished to realize that the video had attracted several hundred thousands of views and several sad comments.
Within a few days, I got an email from the wildlife services and they were glad about the video. They wanted to thank me for my efforts on wildlife conservation. I was happy to share something positive from the camcorder for the first time.
The Odds of Everyday Life
It is not every day that I use my phone to capture video activities of the events that happen in my life. I actually do not remember most of the moments that should be recorded until they expire. What I mean here is that at times a situation may happen; which could be captured and used later for reference. But I only realize about it when it has already passed.
You might consider that I’m ignorant or something, but you must admit that not every person pays particular attention to any situation or information; which comes into one’s way. There’s always some logic and personal attitudes that works behind a person who decides to record a video account of the happenings of a certain scene.
However, recently as I was walking down the streets within my home town, I encountered a nasty situation. It involved two gentlemen who ambushed and later stripped a lady. I can’t tell what the cause of the whole hullabaloo was because the men appeared as if from nowhere and they started to have a confrontation with the lady.
Since I had no particular agenda that day
As I was just strolling by, something told me to record the scene. I used my phone to capture the incident; which matured from a mere confrontation to a fight whereby the woman was losing and hence the guys had the opportunity to strip her as passers-by cheered. They were claiming that she was indecently dressed but according to my opinion; there was more to that than meets the eye.
I saved the recording. That day while watching the evening news at 7, I was astonished to realize that the lady who managed to escape with her lingerie had reported the case to the police and was seeking anyone who would witness the situation.
Furthermore, I wanted to ignore the whole incident, but a guilt feeling in me managed to convince me to share the video clip with the concerned authority for further action ; I mean, this could happen to my sister or girlfriend, and so therefore, I had an obligation of deterring such an occurrence happening again.
The following morning
However, I went to the nearby police station and gave them the clip. They were so glad about it but wanted me to avail myself for witnessing the situation. They had managed to capture the culprits but had no significant evidence of them committing the crime.
Since, I wanted justice to be done, I accepted and this was one of the evidences used to nail them. I might have felt scared about the whole incident. But I still feel that what I did was the best action I could have taken.
How a Video Shoot Made My Star Shine
The dust seemed to have settle just three weeks after the release of my latest song; which I had spend much time practicing and went to produce what I thought was the best for my target audience. My shock was that it was never appreciated as much as I had anticipated and this made me feel so low.
It crushed heavily on my confidence and I felt that music was not something that I should have ventured into. At the same time, there were some nasty comments and satirical criticism on music blogs and our local music board concerning the quality and genre of my music.
‘The Gods must be against me’; so I thought. It had been 4 years producing 16 songs but none was well appreciated, no matter the amount of efforts that I struggled to put in. therefore after this track, I felt much discouraged and it was time that I left music for something else. I couldn’t take it anymore.
After this track went down that fast
Then I approached the local recording label and talked to my manager about my predicament. He felt very sorry for me. I must have been much disappointment. The reason was because I attributed my failure to his recording label. But she maintained calm all through my long tirade. That evening, I left promising to settle the little that I owe her later.
That night was long as I contemplated what I was supposed to do next. The idea of going back to school appeared to be the best solution. Maybe I could learn a discipline; which would benefit me later in life.
The following morning, I woke up quite late and fatigue. I had missed several calls and they all were from my manager. I didn’t want to talk to her. However, I figured out that she might be asking for her dues. At 10, she called again. I wanted to ignore but something told me otherwise. She told me that she wanted me to go to her office because she had another idea. I could have ignored but I had no better choice.
The video production
When I met her, she talked to me about quality video production for my songs starting with my latest. I saw this being odd because it meant that I invest more funds; of which I had none, to a project; which according to me was unfeasible. I rejected her offer citing my woes but she was quick to tell me that she would sponsor. She was categorical that the song was good and a video for it would change everything.
I gladly welcomed her idea and for the next two months we worked together on the video. We ensured that everything was up to standard and set a day for its release.
We released it at a function help to sensitize the public about safe sex and upon announcing the new video, all TV stations were ready to sample it. The video made the song become an instant hit and for the next five months I worked on other 3 video for some 3 songs that I considered the best.
During that time, I had numerous calls by big entertainment companies and performed in several concerts. My stage name had finally become famous and I was enjoying massive airplay. I was back to music.
